Death Doula

What is a death doula?

A death doula is a person who assists in the dying process, similar to a midwife or doula in the birthing process.

“Zan’s positive attitude and her confidence as a skilled nurse allowed us all to finally take a breath and really enjoy our last days with Chelsea…”

Why did you become a Death Doula?

As a previous ICU and hospice nurse, I’ve developed a strong love for humankind and healing. Each of us are on an intense journey through life and we can all use a bit of support along the way. This is why I am here…FOR YOU!

What support do you offer as a Death Doula?

I perform a large variety of services, including but not limited to creating death plans, and providing spiritual, psychological, and social support before and just after death. My role may also include more logistical activities such as planning funerals and memorial services, and guiding mourners in their grief.

Much like in birth, death can be very personal for the individual. Death doulas have also been called midwives of the soul. With my hospice nurse experience, I am well equipped to assist families and friends in each step of the dying process. Each individual has needs custom to themselves and their loved ones.

The role of a death doula can supplement and go beyond hospice care. My goal is to help families cope with death by recognizing it as a natural and important part of life. I will listen and provide assistance to make this tough time a precious memory for everyone involved.

Chelsea’s Beach Trip

“In the Fall of 2019, my dear friend Chelsea was nearing the end of a long and arduous battle with cancer. When she asked for a beach trip with her closest friends and family, we were all willing to make it happen but had some reservations about an 8-hour road trip and several days of more intensive care that were sure to follow. We met Zan literally the day before we were leaving for the beach and she generously rearranged her schedule to join us on the journey. Her experience with hospice care combined with her joyful and loving demeanor immediately set the tone for what turned out to be one of the most beautiful farewells I’ve ever been a part of. Zan’s positive attitude and her confidence as a skilled nurse allowed us all to finally take a breath and really enjoy our last days with Chelsea there at the beach. Zan is not only a remarkable and beautiful human being, she has a special gift to offer comfort and care in a way that makes everyone she comes into contact with feel incredibly loved and valued. Zan was truly a godsend and we couldn’t have pulled off Chelsea’s beach trip without her. We love her to pieces and she has become part of our extended family.”
